In the name of God

“If I were a dictator, religion and state would be separate. I swear by my religion. I will die for it. But it is my personal affair. The state has nothing to do with it. The state would look after your secular welfare, health, communications, foreign relations, currency and so on, but not your or my religion. That is everybody's personal concern!”
-Mahatma Gandhi

Dedicated to humanity

It seems as if humanity is on the brink of extinction. We no longer treat each other as equals. Religion too, has become a reason for us to fight, acting as a catalyst inciting communal flare-ups across the world. Secularism and religious tolerance are words understandable to a countable few. It is thus no wonder that political parties with communal agenda have been able to draw big crowds signifying the rise of religious extremism and intolerance. It is a pity that we have not been able to break the boundaries that have been separating us thus far. Instead of falling prey to the devilish idea of religious extremism and acting as a disgrace to humanity, we must unite and create an environment promoting religious tolerance and harmony, thereby instilling the moral values which we have lost fighting in the name of God.

Indian cinema: Bollywood vs Regional cinema

Dedicated to 100 years of Indian Cinema

Think of Indian cinema and the first thing that comes to one's mind is Bollywood. This takes us to a very important question. Does Indian cinema consist only of Hindi films? The answer is a simple 'no'. Apart from Bollywood(the name itself copied from Hollywood), Assamese cinema, Bengali cinema, Bhojpuri cinema, Gujarati cinema, Kannada cinema, Konkani cinema, Malayalam cinema, Marathi cinema, Oriya cinema, Punjabi cinema, Tamil cinema and Telugu cinema together make up 'The Indian Film Industry'. Indians might boast about releasing over 1000 films in a calender year but they fail to realize that it is not only Bollywood which contributes in this regard. In fact it is the Telugu film industry which releases the maximum number of films in India in a single year. Every film industry other than Bollywood is referred to as 'Regional cinema'. So what makes Bollywood special? Bollywood films have been able to overshadow the so-called 'Regional cinema' mainly due to two reasons, the first being the large percentage of Hindi-speaking population in India and the second being its location, Mumbai. Mumbai, being the financial capital of the country pumps in enough money for Bollywood to survive and prosper. Even then, it is the South Indian film industry which holds about 75% of all film revenues in India. The regular cine-going public in India is unaware of films like 'Shwaas' or actors like Sivaji Ganesan. This is the situation of films and movie-goers in a country which is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema where movies like 'Ready' and 'All the Best' turn out to be hits and good cinema and 'regional cinema' continue to languish in a state of relative obscurity.

We Don't Need No Education

DEDICATED TO MY FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES

It's been days since I slept. Same is the case with many engineering students all over the country. The world seemed to be a better place before engineering happened. It seems that the teachers derive some kind of sadistic pleasure by torturing us with all the assignments, tutorial sheets, class tests, practicals and homework.
Thinking of all this, I am reminded of the song 'We don't need no education ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR5ApYxkU-U'). I often ask myself as to when this shall end. I would like to humbly request the entire teaching community to consider us as humans and understand that it is not possible for us to submit every assignment given to us as and when demanded. I believe that my request needs to be taken into consideration and I deserve my daily quota of sleep.

Cricket: The Beginning of a New Era

Long live India, Long live Indian Cricket

It seems that Team India is all set to dominate world cricket. We won the ICC World T20 tournament in 2007 and the ICC World Cup in 2011 and going by the most recent performances of players against England, in ODIs and Australia, in Tests,(forgetting the debacle in England and Australia) it appears as if this is only the beginning of a new era in international cricket and that Team India shall dominate international cricket for years to come...

THIS BLOG POST IS DEDICATED TO THE INDIAN CRICKET TEAM FOR BRINGING THE COUNTRY TOGETHER AND GIVING US A CHANCE TO CELEBRATE.

No Place for Innocence

"Innocence is thought charming because it offers delightful possibilities for exploitation."

The world is a cruel place. It is a place where money overpowers all, justice is denied, hard work is not rewarded and innocents are butchered. My friend does not believe my words. He believes that the world around him is as beautiful and good as it should be. My friend is an idealist. He believes that one should never lie, no matter what the circumstances are. He does not get involved in brawls and has immense faith in his views and analysis of life. It is his innocence which makes him an easy target for the ones looking for such people. Like thousands of innocents, he too is awaiting a disaster but refuses to accept the fact that it shall happen. I just hope that my friend as well as several thousands of innocents inhabiting this planet do not end up in the hands of the cruel ones. A day shall come when either of the two groups shall vanish and that day is not too far...

THIS BLOG POST IS DEDICATED TO A FRIEND WHOSE WAY OF LIFE MAKES ME LAMENT AT THE END OF THE AGE OF INNOCENCE
